Memory Project

Description

I did this portrait for a little girl in Honduras by the name of Yansi Yaquelin. As a way to use art in a community service fashion, our National Art Honor Society decided to do a program called the Memory Project. We were sent portraits of several orphaned, neglected and disadvantaged children from a particular country. I think the website for the Memory Project explains the purpose best, so here:

"Given that kids who have been orphaned or neglected usually have few personal keepsakes, the purpose of the portraits is to provide them with a special memory of their youth, to honor their heritage and identity, and to help them build a positive self-image. We want to help the kids see themselves as works of art.

Regarding the art students who make the portraits, this is an opportunity for them to open their hearts to youth who have endured many hardships, and to promote the value of sharing kindness with others."

This piece was made using only a tortillon/paper towels, a medium charcoal pencil, a white pencil, and two different kinds of erasers. I probably spent around 7 hours on it.

And yes, I know. The mouth is messed up. I did it too dark. There's a fair amount of issues with this portrait that I would do differently if I could (certain things just won't erase!) but I'm still proud of the final result. :)
